Two tragic incidents occurred in South Carolina this weekend, resulting in the deaths of two individuals in separate house fires in the Midlands area. In Hodges, 78-year-old Eula Byrd was found deceased after a blaze at a home on Miller Road early Saturday morning. Greenwood County Coroner Sonny Cox confirmed the death, stating that both the cause and manner of Byrd’s death are under investigation. The Greenwood County Fire Service, Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office, and South Carolina Law Enforcement Division are involved in the ongoing inquiry into the incident.
In a separate, unrelated event in North Augusta, the body of an unidentified man was discovered inside a burning home on Tiger Lily Circle, as stated by Aiken County Coroner Darryl Ables. Fire crews responded to the scene around 2:45 a.m. An autopsy is scheduled in Newberry to determine the man’s identity and the cause of his death. The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, alongside the coroner’s office, is investigating the fire.
At this time, details regarding what caused either of the fires are not available, and it has not been indicated whether foul play is suspected in these incidents. There were no additional injuries reported from either of the fires, but the extent of the damage to the homes and whether any residents were displaced remains unclear.
