AUGUSTA, Ga (WJBF) – Efforts to protect the Olive Road overpass are coming too little too late.
Wednesday, a large beam was knocked off the bridge after it was struck by a truck trying to get under it.
Several weeks ago, commissioner Wayne Guilfoyle proposed installing padded chains at bridge height to alert drivers, but no action was taken.
“Traffic Engineering was suppose to get a cost, the Administrator was suppose to be bringing it back before us, but it’s a little too late for it now. Hopefully we can put it in place before the bridge opens back up. It would be worth it just to keep this from happening again,” said Commissioner Wayne Guilfoyle.
Olive Road at the bridge will be closed until repairs can be completed.
CSX says the work could take up to three months.
