AUGUSTA, G.A. (WJBF)- Golden Harvest is looking for volunteers to help support their in-house food programs geared towards providing easily accessible meals to children and families.
“We’re averaging about 3,200 bags a week,” Volunteer Program Manager Doressa Hawes said.
A Feeding America study shows 44 million Americans face food insecurity. And Golden Harvest Food Bank works throughout the CSRA to help reduce this number, but with the growing demand for food, the nonprofit’s need for volunteers grows as well.
“We have bought the backpack program and the senior box program in house, and because it’s in house, we’re needing at least 40 volunteers a day,” Hawes said.
Among these new programs is the Backpack program that helps children and students have a meal beyond the schoolhouse.
“We provide shelf-stable food for children to take home over the weekend. There’s one in six children in our area who are– experience hungry, hungriness. So, we try and provide that food for them for over the weekend,” Child and Senior Hunger Specialist Tiffany Matthews said.
