AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Ten years ago, a major ice storm hit the CSRA. And some people remember the time like it was yesterday.
Despite the rain across the CSRA and a bit of flooding Monday, the weather does not compare to the 2014 ice storm.
Chuck Brown, of Augusta, told NewsChannel 6 “It was very cold and rainy and it all turned to ice.”
And Julius Mason, also of Augusta, recalled “It was bad.”
Do you remember where you were on February 12, 2014? Many people do. Ice covered tree branches, power lines and roads, wreaking havoc on day to day life.
“There is more sleet and freezing rain to our west, a whole batch of it…,” said former NewsChannel 6 Chief Meteorologist George Myers.
The weather closed schools, stores and restaurants and kept many people home.
Brown said, “There were trees down everywhere and people were coming all over the southeast to help clean up, cut trees out of the road. We were trapped until they go there, until somebody could get the trees out the street.”
During our broadcast that day, NewsChannel 6 anchor Brad Means stated, “In the Peach State, 126,000 people don’t have electricity right now.”
