Three more Richmond County deputies charged in excessive force investigation at Augusta jail

Three more Richmond County Sheriff’s Office deputies were charged Monday in connection to an incident at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center in May 2022.

Corporal Daniel D’Aversa and deputy Dantavion Jones are each charged with misdemeanor battery and felony violation of oath of a public officer, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

Retired jail Lt. John Whitaker is charged with felony aggravated assault, misdemeanor battery and felony violation of oath of a public officer, according to the release.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Division recently learned about an incident that occurred at the detention center on May 7, 2022, where deputies responded to a call for assistance regarding unruly inmates, according to previous reporting. After the review of body camera and surveillance videos, it was determined that the amount of force used in response to the call was unnecessary.

On Friday, Johnny Atkinson was charged with felony aggravated assault, misdemeanor battery and felony violation of oath of a public officer, according to previous reporting. Austin Birch was charged with misdemeanor battery and felony violation of oath of a public officer.
