Augusta Parks and Recreation Director Maurice McDowell has resigned

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – The Augusta Parks and Recreation Director has resigned.

According to officials, Maurice McDowell has officially resigned and will receive three months severance pay.

McDowell was named Parks and Recreation Director during a contentious vote in July 2020 after previously serving as Deputy City Administrator, and he took over the department in September 2020 after a national search among 150 candidates.

According to officials, McDowell faced criticism over the state of Newman Tennis Center , causing the United States Tennis Association in December to decide to change venues for an annual tennis tournament previously held at the facility due to the need for resurfacing the Center’s tennis courts.

The Augusta Parks & Recreation Department operates and maintains over 60 park sites with more than 1,500 acres of parkland.
