Deeply divided Augusta commission fails to name permanent administrator

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Augusta leaders have been ready for weeks to make a decision on a permanent city administrator.

“I’m ready to get it over with, and I can’t speak for my colleagues, but we have been doing this for how long. It’s been going on for months and months,” said Commissioner Catherine Smith McKnight.

However, the search for a permanent city administrator continues to go on.

City leaders are voting on two candidates: current I.T. Director Tameka Allen and current interim administrator Takiyah Douse, but neither could get the needed six votes, leaving Douse supporters disappointed.

“She’s been doing the job for over two years, and I just feel like she should be the person to continue doing the job. It’s just that plain and simple,” said Commissioner Tony Lewis.

Commissioners are divided five to five on Douse, allowing the mayor to vote to break the tie, and he voted no, sparking a back and forth when Commissioner Lewis called the mayor’s vote a disservice.
