AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – A man opened up to NewsChannel 6 about finding human remains in Augusta, but it could take weeks or months before we all know the identity.
In a recorded video posted to social media, he showed us what started out as a normal day surveying land at Highland Avenue and Gordon Highway in Augusta. It turned into a call to authorities for the discovery of human remains, a skull that we chose not to air out of respect.
Nathaniel Lee Barton, who works for an Arkansas based company, made the find. He told us he was doing a land survey for Chevron at that corner last Friday.
“Any time you’re looking for property corners on jobs, you kind of run into problems. On a good day you find all of them,” said Barton, a land surveyor.
Barton had trouble that day, despite having a plat, and expanded his search into the wooded area. That’s when he found the human skull, somewhere between the gas station and the pin.
“I immediately froze in spot,” he said of his reaction. “At that moment the only thing I could think of is oh my God. Is there a possibility that it’s something else, cause it always ends up being something else.”
