Former RC Law Enforcement Center almost demolished, future in city leaders’ hands

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – The once 5-story law enforcement center is almost completely gone–a tall task that’s taken a while to tear down.

Ron Lampkin, Interim Director for the Augusta Central Services Department, says demolition has been going on for nearly 3 years.

“That has been going on since July 2021, and now we’re in the process and finish line of getting this grated out,” said Lampkin.

The Sheriff’s office originally moved out of the space more than 10 years ago due to mold and leaks.

Augusta voters then approved demolition for $1.5 million.

Thompson Building Wrecking Company has taken on the project, and specialists saying it’s been quite the challenge.

“Well the size of the building and the height. There was so much concrete and rebar was involved. It was a massive operation,” said Roll-Off Manager Gary Jones.

Lampkin says he and the city commend the company for their work, as they also recognized the challenges at hand.

“They’ve done a great job, facing some challenges–weather challenges, it was a large taking for Thompson. The size of the building, the amount of concrete and steel that was involved in this building that had to be crushed and disposed of. So they’ve done a wonderful job,” said Lampkin.
