AUGUSTA, G.A. (WJBF)- A native Augusta woman has gone on to make astronomical achievements– being named the youngest space shuttle pilot, a Navy test Pilot, aerospace engineer and astronaut.
“She wanted to be a hairdresser, but she ended up flying in the sky to be an astronaut driving a space shuttle, which not many women get to do,” Zeke Vozniak said.
“It is just to spread the message that if I can become an astronaut, kids can have any dreams, whatever dreams that they have, and so I wrote it just to inspire young people,” Astronaut and Author Susan Still Kilrain said.
Susan Still Kilrain is doing exactly that for children in her hometown of Augusta and beyond. Saturday, she spent the day reading her children’s book “An Unlikely Astronaut” to local kids.
“I’m interested in becoming an astronaut myself, but what really got me into the book is anybody can become anything they want to be,” Jeffrey Gray said.
Kilrain is one of only three women to ever pilot the space shuttle, leaving more space for other young women to do the same.
