Beyond The Classroom Local teacher helping students one block at a time

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (WJBF) – It looks like any normal Saturday morning for these kids in North Augusta. You get up and play basketball with your friends and hang out.

“Play basketball, just relax and just play,” said Antwan, a second grader who lives in North Augusta Gardens.

But for 9 year old Antwan and his neighbors at North Augusta Gardens, it’s not any normal Saturday. It’s ‘Adopt-A-Block’ day. A day they look forward to once a month.

“We played and … had fun,” said Antwan.

“Antwan loves it. He’ll be waiting for the Saturdays to come and do stuff with them. Because I mean, they don’t have it. There’s nothing out here for the kids,” said Alexis McKie, Antwan’s mom.

Kristy Youngblood recognized that quickly. She teaches at Mossy Creek Elementary, right around the corner.

“We just saw a need. These kids just need somebody to be there for them. And that consistency I think is so important. Like we said we’re going to show up, and we’re going to show up,” said Youngblood, who started North Augusta ‘Adopt-A-Block’.
