Augusta commissioners push big change for code enforcement

AUGUSTA, Ga (WJBF) – Augusta leaders are talking about code enforcement and a possible change in leadership.

“We believe that code enforcement isn’t where it needs to be,” said Commissioner Sean Frantom. “Currently, there’s a law enforcement aspect to being code enforcement, probably put some more teeth in it.”

Right now, code enforcement is under Planning and Zoning, but commissioners scheduled to debate Tuesday putting it under the Marshal’s Office. The departments are familiar with each other.

“We work very well together, and we do work properties together,” said Bill Probus Chief Deputy of the Marshal’s Office. “We deal with yard issues, abandoned vehicles – certain code issues there.”

Some commissioners now pushing to have the Marshal’s Office takeover code duties by the beginning of next year, but understand it might be easier said than done.

“It’s going to be tough,” said Frantom. “You want to respect everybody and give them a chance and in the same respect they’ve had a chance, so we’ll see.”
