Augusta commissioners look to reopen Olive Road but warned history could repeat

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Neighbors living near the Olive Road overpass are pleading with the city to open it again.

“Why is it still closed? I mean come on are you punishing people. I pay a heap of money, I got five houses that I bought man. Come on, open it up, please,” said Jessie Walker.

The road has been blocked for seven months after it was hit again, even though repairs were finished in May.

The city has been looking at what additional safety measures could help.

One recommendation is a metal bar with plastic pieces hanging over the road to alert drivers their vehicle is too tall.

“With the 34 warning signs we have up there, flashing lights, the chains have actually worked good in other cities,” said Commissioner Wayne Guilfoyle.

The Traffic Engineer recommending to commissioners that Olive Road stay closed until the new devices are installed.

“If we open it with the same devices that we’ve already had, nothing will change and so I believe this device that we had up on the screen will make a positive impact but if we just do what we’ve always done somebody will hit it soon,” said Augusta Traffic Engineer John Ussery.
