‘Put a foot in front of the other and keep going’: Relief workers help Augustans in crisis

(This story was updated to add new information.)

When Kristina Arnold moved to Augusta from Pennsylvania with her children two years ago, the U.S. Army veteran was embarking on a new journey in the great unknowns of a different region.

The possibilities for the next phase of her life were endless. Would she make friends? Would her children love their new school?

When Hurricane Helene rushed through and turned the city of Augusta upside down last week, Arnold realized her calling.

For the past several days, Arnold has mobilized with other local single moms hoping to lend a helping hand to do whatever they can to help those in Augusta. From delivering supplies, cooking and serving food to making drives to Columbia, S.C., just to fill up several gas cans and bring them back to the people who needed it when the stations were closed.

“I think it’s that nobody was really helping us when we needed it,” Arnold said. “So now we’re helping everybody else, ou know, the way we probably need it. We’re just single moms with kids just trying to help out, that’s all.”
