AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Some parts of Augusta being advised of traffic delays and detours for continued efforts to clean up the city’s hardest hit areas.
Mayor Garnett Johnson announced, over the next few days, there will be debris pick up for the Walton Way and Wheeler Road areas.
“We just need some help, and we haven’t had any. We haven’t had anybody come in here to really tell us anything…” Marie Handberry said.
It’s been nearly one month since Hurricane Helene tore through the streets of the Garden City.
“Well, it’s unbelievable, you would not believe it– even now I’m kind of trembling. I was able to talk to the people and everybody was saying to thank God,” Mattie Mitchell said.
Mattie Mitchell lives in Augusta and says, she’s never seen anything like this.
“All my life, I’ve always heard that Augusta sits down in a hole, and it wouldn’t ever get us– that’s what I’ve always heard. But if God spared us in a hole, and we down here, just think about what we’d be in if we were not in a hole. This is unbelievable…”
