Augusta taxpayers worry about big hit from proposed trash fee hike

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Plans to increase Augusta’s trash service fees are not playing well with those paying their property taxes.

“That’s a big hit. I wasn’t expecting from what it is now up by 100 bucks,” said Joe Livington.

The proposed new contract for trash service is calling for fees to go from the current price of $320.50 to $440 next year, about an increase of $120.

“I don’t think that’s going to fly based on that significant of an increase 120 dollars,” said Commissioner Sean Frantom.

The trash service fees appear on property tax bills and that is where they are collected, and though the new fee isn’t on there now, taxpayers are concerned about the impact on their budget next year.

“Of course, everything is going up and you pay goes down you pay goes nowhere and then you are on disability, and they tax your disability dollars as well,” said Donald Wren.

“Oh, it’s going to hurt yeah anybody on a fixed income. That’s me – I don’t make very much,” said Bob Gilbert.

“I’m a little up in age, a little bit, so my income is, I’m on a budget. You’ll feel 120 bucks. Definitely feel that,” said Livingston.
