AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – At the corner of Central and Monte Sano people are looking at something that hasn’t been seen in decades…
“I took a picture with my cell phone and sent it to my buddies who grew up in this area, too, and they were flabbergasted,” said Pat Douglas.
“When I saw this, I love the old charm and being 52-years-old I’ve never seen this before, so it’s funny they discovered this,” said Augusta Commissioner Catherine Smith McKnight.
The discovery was due to damage from Helene. It loosened the bricks on the front of the building and when they were removed, some vintage signing was revealed. Signs from the Hill Grocery Company, proprietor Leroy Harris, and they had that good old fashion Coca-Cola in bottles. A part of Augusta’s history no longer hidden thanks to the hard hit from Helene.
“Helene did just astronomical damage here but, in this case, it looked like it did something good, personally I love it,” said Commissioner McKnight.
People are digging the old signs, but the building is in a historic district, so the bricks must be put back.
