‘A hero in death’: Augusta’s Irish-Americans honor man who drowned to save girl

Augusta’s Irish-American community paid tribute on Friday to a city worker who died a hero more than a century ago.

About 20 people representing the city’s Irish-American Heritage Society laid a wreath at the foot of a tower of stones topped with a plaque honoring the memory of Ireland native Dennis Cahill. The monument is at the foot of the Butt Bridge that spans the Augusta Canal.

On July 29, 1902, Cahill drowned in an unsuccessful attempt to save a 9-year-old girl who had fallen into the canal…
