Augusta’s Cedar Grove Cemetery seeks aid post-Hurricane Helene

AUGUSTA, Ga (WJBF)- The CSRA is still seeing the impacts of Hurricane Helene more than 9 months later.

Historic Cedar Grove Cemetery started around 1818 as a burial site for slaves. Over the years many notable African Americans from Augusta have been buried there, making it historically significant. They include R.A. Dent, A.R. Johnson, T.W. Josey and Amanda Dickson Toomer.

It was hit hard during the hurricane and now volunteers are asking for help cleaning it up.

“Well, Cedar Grove cemetery is actually an outdoor museum. It tells Augusta’s story back from the federal age- 1818 when it was founded- until today. We have so many of the highly significant stories here. People that came home, maybe they went north, but they’re buried here in Augusta,” explained Joyce Law, a Historic Preservation Advocate…
