MIDVILLE, GEORGIA – A flood warning remains in effect for parts of Burke and Jenkins counties as Ogeechee River water levels continue to rise, threatening rural roads and communities through Thursday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, river levels had reached 6.5 feet early Tuesday morning, surpassing the 6.0-foot flood stage. The water is expected to crest at 6.6 feet before slowly receding.
Roads and Communities Impacted
Flooding has made the access road into the River Bluff community in Midville impassable. Additionally, the lower portion of Johnson Road near Herndon remains closed due to high water.
Authorities are urging drivers to avoid these areas until the situation improves.
Safety Precautions for Residents
Officials are warning residents in low-lying neighborhoods to be prepared for continued high water over the next 48 hours. Recommended safety measures include:
- Securing outdoor belongings
- Monitoring local weather updates
- Using alternate routes when traveling
The river is expected to drop below flood stage by early Thursday morning. However, additional rainfall could prolong the flooding and worsen road closures.
Monitoring the Situation
Local officials will continue to issue updates as conditions evolve. The Saluda Standard-Sentinel will monitor developments and provide further information on road closures, weather alerts, and community safety notices…
