Burke County asks GDOT for help after fatal crash incidents

BURKE COUNTY, S.C. (WJBF) – In light of a recent fatal crash and a review of five years of crash data, the Burke County Sheriff’s Office has formally requested that the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) conduct a safety study of the intersection at Highway 25 South and Coleman Young Road.

Sheriff’s Office data indicates that between January 1, 2020, and today, August 25, 2025, there have been seven crashes at this intersection. These incidents resulted in three fatalities and two serious injuries.

“Our top priority is the safety of our citizens and visitors that travel this roadway,” said Sheriff Alfonzo Williams. “By working with GDOT, we hope to identify and implement improvements that can help prevent future tragedies at this location.”
