Haircuts & Health Checks: Local Barbershops Introduce Blood Pressure Stations

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Barbershops across the city are taking on a new role in community health. Piedmont Augusta and the American Heart Association (AHA) have launched “Check it in the chair,” an initiative that installs blood pressure stations inside local shops to help residents monitor their health.

Building Trust in Familiar Spaces

The idea centers around the unique trust barbers and beauticians hold in their communities. “Ninety percent of the people trust their barber, ninety percent trust their beautician,” explained barber John Milton. “When they come here, they feel comfortable and don’t mind getting their blood pressure checked because we’re some of the most trusted people in the country.”

Tackling the ‘Silent Killer’

Doctors often call high blood pressure the “silent killer,” as many people live with it unknowingly. Piedmont cardiologist Dr. Mac Bowman said the program’s goal is to bridge that gap. “Most people don’t even know their blood pressure is higher than the norm. This effort by the American Heart Association and our community partners is about getting that information out there.”

Know Your Numbers Hubs

Through support from Piedmont Augusta, blood pressure stations have been installed in select barbershops, creating what the AHA calls “know your numbers hubs.” Jennifer Toole, the organization’s Community Impact Director, said these hubs provide vital access. “These are spaces where people can check their blood pressure if they don’t have a device at home. Thanks to Piedmont’s gift, we’ve even been able to provide some patrons with devices to take home.”

Educating Those on the Frontline

To prepare barbers and staff, an informational meeting was held at The Hub on Chafee Avenue. The event focused on training shop owners to support patrons in recognizing the importance of regular blood pressure monitoring. While the meeting was limited to barbers and their employees, the broader hope is that this effort will ripple outward, encouraging healthier habits throughout Augusta.

Community leaders see this as more than just a medical initiative—it’s about reaching people where they feel safe and comfortable.

Residents in Augusta are encouraged to make use of these new barbershop health stations during their next visit…
