More than a year and a half after the murder of Laken Riley, legal proceedings against her convicted killer, Jose Ibarra, are still unfolding. While Ibarra is currently serving a life sentence without parole, a court-ordered mental health evaluation could reframe the next phase of the case.
Riley, a 22-year-old Augusta University nursing student and former University of Georgia student, was murdered while jogging on the UGA campus on the morning of Feb. 22, 2024. UGA police discovered her body near the Intramural Fields and Lake Herrick after being alerted to her disappearance by her roommate. On Feb. 23, police arrested Ibarra, a 26-year-old Venezuelan man who had entered the United States illegally in 2022.
