Ga. professor fatally shot by roommate after being mistaken for intruder, authorities say

COLUMBUS, Ga. – A Georgia college professor returning home from visiting her family was shot and killed by her roommate in what authorities are calling a tragic case of mistaken identity.

Deputies with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office are currently at the scene of a shooting in Augusta.

Erica Anderson, a Columbus State University professor, was fatally shot around midnight Monday. The 31-year-old was returning home from a trip to visit her husband and children in Indiana, according to Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan.

When Anderson entered the home where she was renting a room, her roommate was sleeping. Bryan says the roommate heard a noise and, believing there was an intruder, grabbed her pistol and walked into the hallway.

“She fired one shot and then fired another one and hit her roommate [Anderson],” Bryan said…
