Remembering Deputy J.D. Paugh: 14 years since a hero’s sacrifice

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is remembering Deputy James David “J.D.” Paugh, who made the ultimate sacrifice 14 years ago.

Shortly after 1 a.m. on Oct. 23, 2011, Paugh was riding his department motorcycle home after completing an off-duty assignment at the Exchange Club Fair.

He noticed a car stopped on the shoulder of I-520 near Gordon Highway and pulled over to check if the driver needed help.

Before he could put his kickstand down, a man inside the car opened fire with an assault rifle, striking Paugh multiple times. Paugh returned fire and wounded the assailant before he was killed…
