GROVETOWN, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -The city of Grovetown is rebuilding its historic train depot, which was demolished in 1973, as part of efforts to preserve local history while the community continues to expand.
The $3.2 million project will serve as a community center and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
“Before Grovetown was a military town, it was a railroad town,” said Jordan Johnson, public information officer for Grovetown. “It was a popular stop on the Picayune train line between Augusta and Atlanta. A lot of wealthy Augusta residents had summer homes in Grovetown to escape the swampy heat, humidity disease of the Augusta area with all the swamps that were around.”…
