AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF)– From Aiken’s very popular stem festival, to shows at the DuPont Planetarium, the science center at USCA has a lot to offer.
We’re having a fascinating discussion today with the director of the Ruth Patrick Science Center, Dr. Gary Senn. Our broad conversation covers beautiful night skies, planetary alignments, and the Northern Lights. You’ll remember, in the last year we’ve had sightings right here in the CSRA!
And as Dr. Senn explains, it has to do with cycles.
“We are in what’s called Solar Maximum now. So the Sun goes through cycles about 11 years, Solar Minimum, when there’s least activity; Solar Maximum, when there’s the maximum activity. Since we’re in the maximum now, as the solar flares, eruptions occur, that sends energy toward Earth, and when it hits our atmosphere, we see those lights. And if the energy is strong enough, we can see them as far south as Georgia and South Carolina.”…
