Doctors Hospital raises cancer awareness with ‘Colon Crawl’

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Doctors Hospital in Augusta has a giant inflatable colon that visitors can walk through, all in the effort to raise awareness about colon cancer this month.

The American Cancer Society states that colorectal cancer rising in young adults and is now the leading cause of cancer deaths in Americans under the age of 50. It’s also the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths every year in the country.

“Well, we’re not exactly sure what the causative agents are in colon cancer. We believe it’s probably a combination of our diet here in America,” said Dr. Chris Carlson, a general surgeon at Doctors Hospital. “Some environmental factors, definitely our genetics contribute to it. So while we’re in the process of studying those things, the best thing we can do to prevent them is just start screening early and make sure we intervene early. So things like blood in your stools, a change in your bowel habits, abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, all of those kinds of things should prompt a visit to your doctor.”…
