COLUMBIA COUNTY, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – A 52-year-old man was taken into custody Friday night after authorities say he led deputies on a chase that began with a dispute in a Walmart parking lot in Columbia County.
According to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the Walmart on Bobby Jones Expressway around 9:30 p.m. following reports of a verbal altercation over a handicap parking space. When deputies arrived, they found Sherrell Wayne Huffman arguing with another person about the spot.
Investigators say the argument escalated when Huffman parked his vehicle behind the other driver’s car, preventing her from leaving. He then reportedly got out of his vehicle, struck the woman’s car, and threatened to beat her and slash her tires, prompting the woman to call 911.
Authorities say Huffman got back into his vehicle and moved to another section of the shopping center near Stanton Optical. When he noticed a patrol car approaching with emergency lights activated, he allegedly sped out of the parking lot…
