Augusta leaders consider changes to ‘Ban the Box’ policy

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – It’s called the justice-impacted community – people who did their time, but can’t escape their past.“The fact of the matter is, that folks who are justice impacted are not boogie men. They’re not what you see painted on the news,” said Commissioner Jordan Johnson.City leaders held this work session on potential changes to the city’s Ban the Box policy. The goal: a better chance of landing a job.“When a person has the opportunity to get hired, the job counts when they get to keep it. If they are not able to keep it, then there is not a way for folks to provide for their families,” said Bridgette Simpson of the Barred Business Foundation.For many speakers here, the struggle is real. They told city leaders they lost jobs even years after their incarcerations.“I couldn’t clear the background check. My last conviction was in 2005.
