North Augusta City Council approves zoning change for proposed cyber center

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) – The North Augusta City Council voted unanimously Monday to approve a zoning change for a proposed cyber center near Brick Pond Park in Riverside Village, reviving a plan that had been tabled last month.

The proposed development would place a cyber center of up to 80,000 square feet on land adjacent to the hotel parking garage and behind Brick Pond Park. The project was first introduced to the planning commission on Jan. 21, moved to a study session on Jan. 26, and came to a council vote on Feb. 2 — where the motion was tabled pending further research.

The February tabling drew applause from residents in attendance. Monday’s meeting was described as far quieter.

Councilman Dennis Briatico, who has been critical of construction debris in the park and has raised concerns about the park’s preservation, voted in favor of the zoning change. Briatico said approving the measure was necessary to give the city any leverage over how the land is used…
