Tripps seek new trial after guilty verdicts in Janell Carwell murder

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Leon and Tanya Tripp have filed a motion for a new trial after they were found guilty in the murder of Janell Carwell, Tanya’s 16-year-old daughter and Leon’s stepdaughter.

Tanya Tripp filed a motion for a new trial on March 31 and Leon Tripp filed a motion for a new trial on March 25.

In early March, Leon Tripp was sentenced to:

  • Count 1, malice murder – life without parole.
  • Count 2, felony murder – life without parole.
  • Count 3, aggravated assault-family violence – 20 years consecutive sentence.
  • Count 4, concealing the death of another – 10 years (runs concurrent with the Count 3 sentence).

Tanya Tripp had four sentences, all concurrent:

  • Count 1, malice murder – life without parole.
  • Count 2, felony murder – life without parole.
  • Count 3, aggravated assault-family violence – 20 years.
  • Count 4, concealing the death of another – 10 years.
