Landscaping for Augusta’s Downtown road project a growing issue

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – The downtown roadwork is a major facelift for the city, but will the blemishes remain?“I hope not, I hope they can get it done. I’m not exactly sure, but it certainly doesn’t look good,” said  Ray Lock.Along Telfair, the work includes dozens of landscape islands.In the areas where the work is farther along, the landscaping is in place and growing, and becoming a growing concern for those who see what’s taking root.“Negligence, negligence, that’s what it looks like,” said Ken Cobb.C&C Automotive has been on Telfair Street for 30 years. The president says he likes the street improvements, but says continued maintenance is a must.“There’s a heavy push to make things good for Masters week. Masters gone, boom, let it grow. I would love for this to be something that was different than that, but if they would make the rest of the street look good that would be so nice,” said Aaron Clements the President. Concerns about the city’s appearance have commissioners creating a new Grounds Maintenance Department, but maintenance on Telfair is out of the city’s hands for now.

“It’s not our responsibility now, because it’s an active construction site,” said Mayor Garnett Johnson.
