Augusta committee recommends waiver for financial penalties for city trash hauler

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Since August, Coastal Waste and Recycling has been on the job for 76,000 city trash customers.

“They come early in the morning, they’re usually come on time. They’re very nice, I don’t have any other complaint about them,” said Valerie Johnson.But trash service is not an exact science, stuff happens, and in the contract with the city, Coastal agrees to pay for it.That includes missed pickups, damage to carts, and other property, spills and leaks coming from its trucks.In its first four months, Coastal racked up $144,000 in penalties, but company officials are telling commissioners it was not all their fault, and requested a waiver of the first 30 days of the fines.“I’m not sure if it’s fair, I’m not sure if they are not meeting the obligation of what they’re supposed to do but I do understand when you start up something in a new environment, there may be some costs,” said Commissioner Francine Scott.A commission committee agreed to waive $70,000 in penalties, but Augusta trash customers say their biggest complaint is having to pay extra $174 dollars a year for those recycling cans with bright green lids.
