‘Shot to death while saving his brother’s life’: Commerce City police looking for cold case answers

DENVER (KDVR) — A Commerce City Police detective is searching for answers nearly four years after a man was fatally shot while trying to help his brother who was being robbed at gunpoint.

Yailyn Cazares was the victim advocate after a gunman killed Emilio Fernandez in front of his home on July 25, 2022, and now four years later as a detective, she is trying to bring justice and closure to Fernandez’s family.

“I was actually the responding victim advocate and have been keeping up with the family throughout the course of these years that have passed since 2022,” Cazares said. “Now that I’m a detective, I’ve been trying to find other additional leads, but unfortunately we haven’t been able to find much.”…
