A Denver judge sentenced Jakiem Whitham to life in prison without the possibility of parole on Friday for the shooting death of 19-year-old Ileanna Hernandez, who was riding an escalator down into the bus terminal beneath Union Station when a stray bullet from a fight over a handgun tore into her neck. Whitham, now 20, was convicted of first-degree murder.
The shooting unfolded shortly before 10 p.m. on April 28, 2025, inside the Regional Transportation District’s Chestnut Pavilion bus terminal in the 1600 block of Chestnut Place beneath Union Station, according to 9News. Security camera footage cited in a law enforcement arrest affidavit showed Whitham shoving a 19-year-old man on a staircase and striking him in the face twice with a handgun before the two fought over the firearm on an escalator, where it discharged into Hernandez’s neck. The Denver District Attorney’s Office says Whitham pistol-whipped the other man during the confrontation, and investigators say the two men fought over the gun before it fired.
Hernandez was rushed to the hospital in critical condition immediately after the shooting and died from her injuries a week later, on May 5, 2025, according to CBS News. Denver prosecutors upgraded the charges to first-degree murder once she died. The male victim in the underlying fight was later found with the gun by RTD police, the outlet’s report notes.
A Bond That Didn’t Hold
At the time of the Union Station shooting, Whitham had been out of jail for about a month after posting a $50,000 cash or surety bond tied to a separate case involving a February 2025 shooting in Aurora.
