‘World’s slowest escape’: Officer helps wandering tortoise return home in Littleton

DENVER (KDVR) — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office on Friday shared body-camera footage of a daring escape by a suspect from late August, and it required some bystander assistance.

On August 31, Animal Control Officer McMullen was sent to Littleton for a report of a wandering suspect — but this was no ordinary suspect — it was a Sulcata tortoise.

The nearly 100-pound tortoise, named Lard, seemingly had a big vacation on the horizon; however, the sheriff’s office said Lard “absolutely” lacked a sense of urgency.

Lard escaped from a fenced-in yard and headed out for an adventure in the neighborhood, refusing to negotiate with their owner…
