Before Waymo launched public rides in Denver last month, I’d spent two weeks around the driverless cars in San Francisco — one this spring and another in fall 2024.

I felt strangely comfortable watching them navigate the city. That is until we rented a car.

We needed to turn from a four-way stop into a parking lot. On the other side sat a Waymo. Normally, you’d make eye contact with the other driver to decide who goes first, but there was no eye to catch.

We went first, albeit carefully. It’s a similar feeling crossing the street in front of one, the car waiting there as if staring into your soul…
