Gripped by Netflix’s Lizzie Borden slasher? Here are haunted mansions in Colorado to checkout before Halloween

DENVER (KDVR) — Netflix released “MONSTER:  The Lizzie Borden Story,” based on the true story of the murders of the real Lizzie Borden’s parents in Massachusetts.

Borden’s house is said to be haunted by the tragedy and is called one of the most haunted places in America, but Colorado’s own ghostly past can compete for that title. Now that we are in October, here are the haunted houses you should check out.

Peabody-Whitehead Mansion

You can not only take a ghost tour around the Peabody-Whitehead Mansion, but you can actually live inside it with the spirits.

Built in 1889, the mansion was once home to William Riddick Whitehead, a renowned surgeon and leader in the Denver medical scene. But it is not his ghost who haunts the halls. He and his family began to see paranormal activity in 1902. Whitehead was a surgeon for the Russian army in the Crimean War, and they believed the spirits he was unable to save followed him back home to 1128 N Grant St., Denver.

The “Peabody” name comes from former Colorado Governor James Peabody. Peabody did not carry a reputation as an upstanding citizen. Peabody sent hundreds of troops to disband miners who went on strike in Cripple Creek. Alongside the Mine Owner’s Association, he sought to prevent miner’s unions by arresting activists, city and county officials and staffers of a newspaper without legal warrants.
