On June 1, 2025, about 20 people gathered on Boulder’s Pearl Street, as people had done nearly every week since Oct. 7, 2023, to walk for the hostages held in Gaza. A man attacked them with a makeshift flamethrower and Molotov cocktails. Karen Diamond, 82, died from her injuries weeks later.
This June, on the anniversary, the Boulder chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine posted a statement praising the attacker’s “decisive act of resistance.” The university called the post abhorrent. Most of Colorado’s elected officials said nothing.
And the woman likely to be Denver’s next member of Congress still won’t say what the attack was.
In June, Democratic socialist Melat Kiros defeated 15-term Rep. Diana DeGette in the Democratic primary for Colorado’s 1st Congressional District. Days before the vote, 9News asked her whether the Boulder firebombing was antisemitic. She said she did not know what was in the attacker’s heart.
