Aurora council kicks member’s baby off dais with rule change

The Aurora City Council voted Monday to approve new rules regarding who may sit on the dais.

The new regulations say only council members, the mayor, city manager and city attorney may sit at the platform. The changed was made after council members complained to fellow council member Alison Coombs about her infant raising a ruckus at meetings.

Coombs voted against the change, although she already had voluntarily agreed to stop bringing the child to meetings. She said the new rules could prevent a new mother from nursing their baby. Other council members said mothers still could do so while attending the meeting virtually.

Aurora City Council member Stephanie Hancock lamented the need for the legislation. She said it should be common sense not to bring your disruptive baby onto the dais. Jurinsky said the baby’s antics included flying tissue boxes and even water poured on council member Angela Lawson.

Council wanted baby out two years ago

The council first expressed its dissatisfaction of Coombs bringing her baby to meetings two years ago. They sent her a letter calling the practice unprofessional.
