Migrant encampment swept twice in one week by Denver

DENVER ( KDVR ) — A migrant encampment at 51st and Emerson streets has been swept twice in one week, according to Denver officials.

According to the city, the sweeps were to enforce the camping ban on Denver-owned park property.

The first sweep was last week. On Monday, Denver Parks rangers saw “unattended items, including tents” that were still on park property. According to the city, a 48-hour notice of removal was posted for the removal of those items.

On Wednesday, rangers and the Denver Police Department swept the encampment again. The city said it offered services, shelter and storage for the tents’ occupants.

“Mayor Johnston and his team are working around the clock to address the ongoing arrival of newcomers and the overlapping challenge of people living in encampments on our streets, especially during Denver’s dangerously cold winters,” a city spokesperson said in an email to FOX31.

“For both groups, the focus remains to help everyone find solutions that are much safer than living outdoors,” the city statement continued. “This includes working with newcomers to identify available housing options in our city or to provide onward travel to another location.”
