In a recent incident, a Denver Sheriff’s Department deputy named Jeremiah Espinoza-Young was taken into custody following his involvement in a New Year’s Day hit-and-run accident. The arrest affidavit, released by the Aurora Police Department, provides insights into the events surrounding this incident.
According to the affidavit, the off-duty deputy was driving home after spending time with friends when he suddenly fell asleep at the wheel. This unfortunate situation resulted in a collision with a barrier, and rather than staying at the scene, Espinoza-Young fled.
At 30 years of age, Espinoza-Young now faces several charges, including attempting to influence a public servant, false reporting to authorities, leaving the scene after striking unattended property, and careless driving.
The affidavit goes on to detail the sequence of events that unfolded after the crash. Immediately following the collision, Espinoza-Young returned home and reported his vehicle as stolen. When questioned by the Denver Police Department, he claimed that he had discovered the theft when he woke up at around 10 a.m. on New Year’s Day to go to work. He promptly reported the alleged theft to both the Denver department and the Aurora Police dispatch.
