Neighbors’ safety fears confirmed after 2 stabbings at Denver hotel shelter

DENVER (KDVR) — Community members living near the new shelter at the former Embassy Suites off Hampden Avenue say their fears are already coming true.

From concerns expressed mid-December to fears confirmed in January, neighbors shared videos of a large police presence Saturday night at the shelter for families.

The Denver Police Department posted that the presence was for a large disturbance with several people arrested. A follow-up message explained there was one person stabbed Saturday night, with an ongoing investigation.

The stabbing on Saturday came a day after a different stabbing that police deemed related to domestic violence.

“We’re only 30 days in. Two stabbings and various incidents weekly with ambulances,” nearby condo owner Rosemary Guilmette said.

Guilmette serves as the president over the condos, which back up to the shelter.

“A lot of drug exchanges — cars are pulling in, they’re getting out, they can see it from their patios,” Guilmette said. “I’m feeling a little frustrated, partly because the whole thing was not transparent.”
