DENVER (KDVR) — Denver is launching a way to help renters report landlords who still haven’t gotten their residential rental property license .
“Our city council became concerned with some of the complaints they were receiving in Denver from tenants who were living in unsafe conditions,” said Eric Escudero, spokesperson for the Denver Department of Excise and Licenses.
Escudero said the online complaint portal opened recently, and the hope is to make Denver a safer place for all people renting.
“We’ve already seen 14,000 landlords in Denver get their license,” Escudero said. “We have a lot of responsible landlords in Denver, and hopefully this weeds out the few nonresponsible.”

The residential rental property license requires landlords to have a third-party inspection that shows the property has basic living requirements like running water, a heater and no pests. Once they are approved for the license, that will last four years.
