Demand spikes at local nonprofit amid migrant crisis

DENVER (KDVR) — Nonprofit leaders in the metro area say there’s a growing need for more resources as many are struggling to keep up with demand amid the migrant crisis.

Morgan Seibel, executive director of WeeCycle , a nonprofit that provides families with essential baby gear, said they’ve seen a major increase in attendance at their distribution events, particularly among Venezuelan migrant families.

“Oftentimes, families are lining up an hour or so before our events even start to just make sure they’re towards the beginning of the line and can get the items they need,” Seibel said.

Seibel said the demand for diapers at their events has jumped 52% in one month and attendance has increased 66% from September to December 2023.

“Being at the distribution events is both a heartwarming experience because you’re able to supply these essentials for families and it’s also heartbreaking because you see how little people have for their children and themselves,” Seibel said.
