Pueblo weighing options as Denver migrant crisis spills over to southern Colorado

The ongoing crisis that’s seen more than 40,000 migrants come to Denver over the past year, stretching the city’s resources so thin that Denver Mayor Mike Johnston announced significant cuts to the city’s budget on Friday, is making other Colorado cities assess their resources and options.

Pueblo city and county officials met behind closed doors Wednesday evening at Pueblo City Hall to address the possibility of migrants arriving in Pueblo, although newly elected Mayor Heather Graham has stated that Pueblo has not yet seen a large influx of people arriving in the community.

“At this time, the City of Pueblo is in discussion with our community partners, fellow legislators, law enforcement, emergency responders and non-profits to discuss the influx of migrants arriving in Southern Colorado,” Graham said in a statement. “We know that other surrounding communities in Southern Colorado are facing issues of serving new people arriving in their cities and we know this is a concern for the public. Many are concerned as to what Pueblo’s response may be should the City of Pueblo see an influx of newcomers to our city.”
