I lost $5,000 while standing in the sheriff’s office lobby – I was told to come by a real deputy but soon learned truth

A FAKE deputy scammed a man out of $5,000 while he was in the sheriff’s office lobby last month.

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office in Colorado released a statement explaining how the man fell victim to the elaborate scheme.

A man came into the lobby of the BCSO lobby on January 25 and stood near the front desk while he was talking to someone on the phone.

The records staff worker had been helping another visitor when she returned to help the man.

She found him sitting in the lobby and no longer on his phone, so she assumed he was waiting for someone.

A few moments later, the man approached the front desk saying that he believed he had just been scammed.

The man explained to the front desk worker that he sent someone claiming to be a sheriff’s deputy $5,000 over the phone and once he paid, the caller hung up.

BCSO spokeswoman Carrie Haverfield said this wasn’t the first time the office had heard of people being scammed while inside the building, calling it a tactic used by scammers to make their stories more believable.
