Aurora supports homeless veterans, angry council member says as she blasts news media

An angry Aurora City Council member Danielle Jurinsky said Thursday that despite reports to the contrary in the news media, a resolution she proposed this week does not negatively affect homeless veterans.

The resolution states that no entity can send migrants or homeless people to Aurora without an intergovernmental agreement spelling out how that organization will pay to support them. Jurinsky pointed to Denver, where department heads have been told to slash their budgets by as much as 15% to pay for the migrant response. “The Aurora City Council demands that organizations first enter into an agreement with Aurora before transporting individuals experiencing homelessness or migrants into Aurora for temporary housing or for services to assist the City Council to prepare for any resulting financial hardship or burdens on available resources,” the resolution states.

In the same breath, the resolution touts the city’s love for migrants. “Aurora is proud of its identity as the most diverse and global city in the state, values and has a strong working relationship with our immigrant communities and takes seriously the health, safety, welfare, and constitutional rights of all its residents. Aurora urges immediate action by the federal government to take responsive steps to address the systematic issues of the ongoing migrant crisis, secure the border, and enact immediate comprehensive immigration reform.”
