Volunteer group evolves to meet ever-changing migrant needs

DENVER (KDVR) — One group of volunteers has been gathering donated supplies and offering services for migrants for several months, adapting to their changing needs.

The group, Highlands Moms and Neighbors, has been collecting and distributing donations for migrants since November.

Since then, their work has evolved to more specialized services as the migrants begin to settle in the U.S. and Colorado.

“Community members that knew each other gathered items like clothes and suitcases and boots and food, things that were being requested by migrants when we would stop by in the camp,” Jenifer Kettering said.

Early on, so many supplies were collected that there wasn’t room for everything.

“It exploded,” Kettering said. “So it was like overflowing on the lawns of people’s houses, living rooms were being piled with people bringing things.”

Their operation went from charity to focusing particularly on the long-term needs of people who are settling in a foreign land.
